Buddhist Art originated in India and has since flourished in most of Asia. As a genre of art its achievements have been glorious, making it a treasured part of our global heritage. Buddhist art has its roots in Buddhist thought and doctrine, and its creation is often motivated by devotional belief. Beauty is its ultimate manifestation. For thousands of years, artistic creations in the form of vivid portrayals of Buddhist personages and depictions of symbols have not only contributed to the Buddhism’s social function of guiding and transforming the world and purifying the human mind, but have also given expression to religious experience and spiritual states that transcend verbal description.

This website has been designed to help us draw valuable lessons and inspiration from the extensive treasury that is Buddhism’s artistic heritage, as well as to provide a systematic foundation for research in this field.  Its current content, constituting the first of several stages of incremental development, covers the following: Introduction to Buddhist Art; Buddhist Icnonography; Buddhist Art in South Asia, South East Asia, East Asia, Tibet and along the Silk Road.
