A Commentary on Faith in Mind

Chapter 14 False View of Dualism

By Wong Weng Hon

Do not abide in dualistic view
Take care not to seek after them
As soon as there is right or wrong
The mind is scattered and lost

Commentary:

A wordling perceives the myriad things of the universe or the multiplicity of the empirical world in terms  of dualistic view. He or she discriminates the objects of senses  into dualistic entities. In other words, he or she makes distinction between self and other, the perceiver and the perceived, the subject and the object, the subject and predicate  and the substance and the attribute. In short, the worldling perceives  all objects substantially and dualistically, and reifies them as independent separate,  substantial entities. This is incompatible  with the Buddha’s  teaching of Dependent  Co-arising and Non-self or Insubstantiality. The worldlings are advised by the Buddha  not to view things substantially as substantial view of ontology is erroneous. There is no Self, Soul  nor intrinsic nature exiting in all things or phenomena. The Buddha advises the worldlings  not to uphold the substantial view of dualism. As long as the view of dualism or discrimination persists, the mind  is dissipated, dispersed and obsessed by the objects of senses. The view of duality is a False mind which perceives arising and ceasing. Non-duality or  non-discrimination is the True Mind which perceives  neither arising nor ceasing. Conceptualization or conceptual proliferation, rooted in ignorance or delusion, is a mind disease which destroys self-enlightenment.  The view of non-duality  permits one to enter into  the Supreme way of Buddhahood- Nondualism or Unity.
