A Commentary on Song of Enlightenment

Chapter 12 A Saint is Alone

One like this always walks alone
For one is always solitary
Every Perfected One travelling
on the same path of Nirvāṇa
Following tradition, his ‘chi’ is clear
His spirit is high
And his appearance disheveled
His body hardened
Who will take notice ?

Commentary:

A saint always leads a solitary life but is not lonely. He is in the world but beyond the world. Every Buddhist saint, an Arahant, Paccekabuddha, Bodhisattva or Buddha undertakes the Buddhist Path of either the Noble Eight Fold Path or the Path of Six Perfections to self-actualize Nibbāna or Nirvāṇ̣a. He is characterized by an unimpeded or liberated mind and maximal spiritual attainment through Self–realization or Self-awakening. He has discerned the Absolute Truth of Unity or Non-duality of the cosmos. Consequently,he has discerned the cosmic illusion of the multiplicity of the empirical world. He has thus annihilated the illusive Self or Ego superimposed by the ignorance of a worldling.

Externally and physically, his attire may look disarranged and his face may look stern, dispassionate and indifferent. But internally, he abounds in great compassion. No one recognizes him as a saint of great Wisdom. A sage will not declare to anyone that he is a saint – an Enlightened One or a Seer of Absolute Truth. If he acknowledges so, he is not a true sage. Any verbal self-acknowledgement of the status of a saint is an expression of Self or Ego. The notion of Self or Ego impedes self-enlightenment and emancipation. Self-enlightenment and emancipation can only ensue from the annihilation of Self or Ego. Underlying the multiplicity, he has discerned the Absolute Truth of Unity or Non-duality. Such discernment purifies his mind and redeems his pure and Infinite consciousness – the Nirvāṇic state of a liberated mind. He is capable of dwelling in anywhere and yet he still preserves or maintains his pure, infinite consciousness naturally with ease. He is said to be able not to dwell upon anything in the world and produces the pure, infinite consciousness of liberation. No predicament in life will perturb and destroy his absolute poise and mental appeasement. He is composed like a big rock unshaken by the wind however strong it may be. The noiseness of his mind is completely appeased or silenced.
