Chapter 25 : Door of Non-action

How can this be compared
To the true door of Non-action
Allowing the instantaneous entry
Into the stage of Tathāgata.

Commentary :

Non-action is karmalless or cankerless action. It is pure action of Non-duality directed and empowered by the Buddha-mind. Conversely, impure action is directed and empowered by self-centric ego. Self-centric ego is grasping upon self-identity or other identities. It defiles the ordinary mental consciousness. Non-action is pure action directed and empowered by pure mind. Pure mind does not produce any karma. The pure action is Nirvāṇic action. The impure action is karmatic action.
Ordinary action is karmatic action, a  product of dualistic view. It is a dualistic view of discrimination between the perceiver and the perceived , between the subject and object, between the subject and predicate and between the substance and attribute. Dualistic view is discriminative view of substantiality. It is incompatible with the Insubstantial view of Dependently co-arisen Unity of Existence. The doer is perceived substantially as one discrete entity. The action done  is substantially perceived as another discrete entity. Thus, two separate or autonomous entities are perceived by the ordinary mind of a worldling. ‘Sākyamuni Buddha promulgates that dualistic view of substantiality is wrong view. The Exalted One declares that only the insubstantial view of dependently co-arisen Unity of Existence is the right view of ontology. The Unity of Existence is the process reality of dynamic process becoming (sanātana dharma).

Whoever intuitively discerns the ultimate Truth of dependently co-arisen Unity of existence is said to have entered the door of Non-duality. All his actions committed are actions of non-action. Non-action connotes that the all actions committed are not directed by self-centric ego. They are selfless actions.  Only the perfection of wisdom (prajñānapāramitā) developed can obliterate the self-centric ego.
Perfection of wisdom can be developed  from intuitive discernment of the Emptiness (空) of the five aggregates (Heart Sūtra;心經) or the intuitive discernment of signlessness, marklessness or characteristiclessness (無相) of all phenomena (Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtras;大般若經) or the relinquishing of four-fold form of inherent existence (離四相) : the form of self(我相), the  form of person(人相), the  forms   of sentient beings(眾生相) and  the form of life span (壽者相) expounded in the Diamond Sūtra. Whoever relinquishes all forms of inherent existence sees the Buddha (離一切諸相,則名諸佛). To see the Buddha is to intuitively discern the eternal Truth of dependently co-arisen Unity of Existence.

The Diamond Sūtra expounds that non-action can be realized too by non-dwelling or non-clinging upon any phenomenon and produce the (pure) mind (無所住而生其心). Non-dwelling is non-grasping upon the five aggregates as this is I; this is mine; this belongs to me. All notions of proprietorship are relinquished including the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind. All these human sense faculties ultimately do not belong to us. In fact, nothing in the world belongs to us. They belong to the cosmic Unity.  To see the Buddha, one must negate one’s individual self and sees the Unity of Existence as the only Reality. One Buddhist term perfectly describing the non-proprietorship or non-private ownership of everything is Insubstantiality or Selflessness (Anattā). All world’s religions teaches the ultimate Truth of Anattā in order to see the Lord that may be dissimilarly designated.

Everything belongs to the Unity of Existence as individuality or individuation does not exist. In whatever wealth that we acquire and possess, human beings are only the trustees of the Unity of Existence (Monotheistically put, human beings are merely trustees of God).  If you really know what I mean, you know your Lord or your religion. If you do not apprehend , please don’t lose heart, strive on diligently  to understand why you do not exist individually and  you possess nothing in the ultimate Reality. Of course, conventionally, the wealth possessed by you is legally yours. There is no harm to earn wealth as long as you know your True Self – the Truth Body of a Tathāgata or Buddha
The consummation of perfection of wisdom or Chan or Zen wisdom enables one to enter the door of Non-duality to perform non-action in all generous actions. Whoever has entered the door of  Non-duality becomes a Tathāgata (如來). The Tathāgata of the Mahāyāna tradition  is a Bodhisattva who  ascends spiritually (上求) through  enlightenment to gain perfection of wisdom and descends spiritual(下化) through great compassion to guide and liberate the unemancipated sentient beings.
The Diamond Sūtra expounds that in order to see (intuitively discern) a Tathāgata , a believer should not perceive a Tathagata in terms of a substantial  personality or figure (不可以身相見如來). The Sūtra reminds the  believers that all corporal forms are illusory and unreal. They are empty of inherent existence. They do not possess self-natures or individual identities. Whoever perceives form as formlessness  perceives the Tathāgata (凡所有相皆是虛妄; 若見諸相非相,則見如來).
The Tathāgata is the eternal Truth of Unity of Existence. Unity of Existence is formlessness (animitta).  One’s  Truth-body (Dharmakāya法身) is manifested when the illusiveness and unreality of the multiplicity of forms are intuitively penetrated into. Truth Body is Buddhist ‘Holy Spirit’ that is empty of self-centric ego. This Truth Body is manifested when the mind of delivered one is directed and empowered by his or her  pure, infinite and non-manifestative  consciousness.
A Bodhisattva or Buddha is a Tathāgata. A Tathāgata is characterized by this Truth Body.  Truth Body is the pure mental consciousness free from self-centric ego. Any liberated Buddhist with a Truth Body performs non-action of all actions. Non-action is the attribute of a Tathāgata. The Bodhisattva liberates all sentient beings without reifying the inherent existences or self-identities of sentient beings. He liberates  all sentient beings and he  conceives yet that  no sentient beings are liberated. All actions of a true Bodhisattva are non-action of all actions.

Editor’s Note:

Whoever has entered the door of Non-duality is said to have developed the perfection of wisdom of Zen. He performs non-action of all generous actions. Non-action of is pure action devoid of self-centric ego.
