Bodhisattva Maitreya

Korea

Old Silla or Paekche period
(early 7th Century)

gilt bronze

height - 91 cm

"The play of drapery in this figure seated in meditation recalls the sculpture of the Northern Ch'i in China. The comparatively high number of surviving bronze images of Maitreya from this period - this is by far the finest of them - suggests that his cult was especially popular. The type was imitated in Japan. (from "The Oriental World")
