In this, our premier edition, we explore the Theravāda tradition as found in a key locus of its early systematization and growth, and the birthplace of Buddhism’s literary heritage – the ‘Fountain of Buddhist Wisdom’: Sri Lanka.
Our articles explore the history, practices, ‘sights and scenes,’ modern revolutions and controversies of Theravāda Buddhism in Sri Lanka, with a special focus on its interactions, and mutual influences with, contemporary Sri Lankan society. Sri Lanka is truly a place of rare beauty, elegant traditions and touching sincerity; yet it is inescapably a country in the midst of serious political and social crises. In this edition we address local Theravāda Buddhism’s impact, roles and interconnections with regards to these contrasting facets.
Upcoming themes for our first year’s editions shall be ‘Buddhism and Psychology,’ ‘The Resurgence of Buddhism in Modern China’ and ‘Buddhist Meditation.’ The Bodhi Journal team hopes that you both enjoy, and benefit from reading our first edition, and look forward to your continued readership in future publications.
