Dhammasara Buddhist Nuns Monastery
A forest monastery for Buddhist nuns in Perth, Australia, offering a sanctuary for women seeking the monastic life.
Was established by the Buddhist Society of Western Australia in 1998. The monastery’s core aim is to provide the space for women to undertake the training to become fully ordinated nuns (Bhikkunis) realizing the goal and heartwood (Dhammasara) of this holy life. The monastery for Buddhist lay women to experience the monastic lifestyle first hand.
In the tradition of Theravada forest monasteries, the Sangha at Dhammasara practice in a natural bushland setting. The monastery is located in the Darling Range, an hour’s drive east of Perth, and its grounds comprise 583 acres characterized by gentle slopes, numerous creeks and exposed granite outcrops. The sites host to a complex mosaic of Jarrah and Wandoo forests, shrublands and heathlands, along with a wealth of native Australian wildlife.
The independence of Dhammasara as a forest monastery for nuns in the Theravada tradition is a distinguishing feature. The Sangha at Dhammasara embody an important role model for all Buddhists.
“ I had a very special time at Dhammasara … I learned how to enjoy just sitting and quieting my own mind. I came back a different person.” Suparmi Sakri, lay guest, 2011
“So this holy life does not have gain, honour, renown for it benefit, or the attainment of virtue for its benefit, or the attainment of concentration for its benefit, or knowledge and vision for it benefit, but it is this unshakable deliverance of mind, that is the goal of this holy life, its heartwood and its end.” Majjhima Nikaya Sutta 29
The monastery is open every day from 10:15am to 1 pm. Lau people come for the daily offering of the meal at 10:30am and participate by taking the three refuges and the five precepts. A short Dhamma reflection is then offered by a senior member of the Sangha. The visitors are also welcome to speak to the senior nuns after the meal. Buddhists and non-Buddhists are welcome.
