Seated figure of Lo-han

China

Ming Dynasty
(16th Century)

light grey terracotta with coloured glazes

height - 94 cm

"The figure belongs to a set of sixteen or eighteen Lo-hans, the chief disciples of the Buddha. These groups were generally arranged on stone benches along the side walls of the hall of Chinese temples. In them the rigorous iconographic prescriptions of later Buddhist sculptures were relaxed in favour of a relatively free and naturalistic rendering." (from "The Oriental World")
